State of Emergency Declared
Category 5 Hurricane Dorian has devastated the islands of the Bahamas as it makes its way towards the U.S. states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center has warned of storm surges, presenting a “life-threatening” danger but notes that that “a slower westward to west-northwestward motion is forecast during the next day or so,” potentially delaying the arrival of the weather system on the U.S. seaboard.
The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a number of warnings for ports and set port Condition Zulu for the Port of Fort Pierce, Port of Miami, Port Everglades and Port of Palm Beach due to the possibility of “sustained gale force winds greater than 39 mph” that may arrive within 24 hours.
Authorities in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina have declared a state of emergency with many residents making preparations to evacuate.
