Wagenborg Adds to MPV Fleet

Dutch Carrier Acquires Four Previously-Chartered Vessels for General Cargo Operations

Netherlands-based Wagenborg Shipping has acquired four multipurpose cargo vessels that had previously been part of its chartered fleet.

In early October, the Dutch carrier acquired the MV Helenic, a single-decker MPV with a deadweight cargo capacity, or DWCC, of 3,442 tonnes. The vessel, built in 2008 at the Bijlsma shipyard in the Netherlands, was renamed Eikborg.

At the same time, Wagenborg obtained the MV Imke, which has been renamed Neuseborg. The ship, built in 2006 at the Ferus Smit shipyard, boasts a DWCC of 6,400 tonnes.

Also in October, the single-decker MV Alana Evita was handed over to Wagenborg and renamed Iepborg. The ship was built in 2009 at Bijlsma and boasts a DWCC of 3,458 tonnes.

The fourth vessel to be acquired by the carrier was the MV Dagna, which will continue operations under the new name Nijlborg. Nijlborg was built in 2005, also at Ferus Smit, and has a DWCC of 6,400 tonnes.

“These vessels were already part of our chartered fleet, so there are no changes in fleet size or the commodities transported,” a spokesperson told Breakbulk.

Wagenborg Shipping is a division of Royal Wagenborg, the maritime logistics group that also operates heavy-lift specialist Nedlift. Its fleet of 170 owned and chartered, ice-strengthened MPVs ranges in size from 1,700 to 23,000 tonnes.

Earlier this year, the group confirmed it had ordered a third EasyMax MPV to be built at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard, with delivery of the newbuild expected in the first half of 2023.

The 150-metre-long, box-shaped EasyMax vessel has a DWCC of 13,800 tonnes, and is designed to carry all kinds of general cargo, including bulk, breakbulk and project cargo.

An option had been taken to build a fourth, the Dutch shipping company said.
