Wilmington Handles Record Turbine Cargo

39 Blades for Beech Ridge II

Authorities at the Port of Wilmington in Delaware have overseen transit of a record cargo of wind turbine blades via the port.

The shipment involved transfer of 39 blades over two days which were unloaded from the breakbulk vessel BBC
Topaz.
The massive blades, each more than 200 feet and weighing 13.5 ton, are destined for the GE Renewable Energy Beech Ridge II wind turbine project in West Virginia.

"This was a delicate operation, as the slightest error could have resulted in damage to one blade, and that makes a group of three inoperable," said Mike Hall, chief operating officer for GT USA-Wilmington.

“We are thrilled to be able to support mutual customer GE Renewable Energy by successfully receiving the largest wind turbine blades to cross our docks. The efforts of the entire team led to providing quality service to GE Renewable Energy for whom we have handled hundreds of blades over many years,” said Eric Casey, CEO of GT USA-Wilmington.

GT USA is the U.S. division of Gulftainer, the world’s largest privately owned independent port operator and logistics company. The group signed a 50-year concession to operate and expand the Port of Wilmington in Delaware last year.
